P80 Volvo

I've just bought my V70, having sold my S70 that I owned for nearly 5 years. Never thought I'd own the same model in a row.

I'd love to but I never had the chance sadly to drive a T5. I got to have a go in the 190ish bhp 4wd version. I think that's the 20v turbo but it was an auto and whilst that was buttery smooth, it had too much lag on the box for my liking, and subsequently, I didn't actually find it THAT much faster. I think the brochure has 8 seconds or something to 100kph for that model. I've done 9 in the 10v. I much prefer having that ability to drive it. Much more hands on in a manual, especially if your driving quickly.

T5 though is absolutely on the dream car list. Even now, they look so right compared to modern stuff. What's yours like? Colour? Spec etc?

So here's my daily driver. a 1998 V70 Tdi SE Auto I've owned since 2002 and now just shy of 230,000 miles. Since retirement when the works van was returned it's been put back to work.

Unfortunately the cambelt failed in 2016 which by any sensible criteria should have been the end of it. However the car was far too good to scrap and I was far too fond of it to do so. A ph3 V70 2.4D was bought in some haste whilst I thought about what to do with it. I ended up fixing it myself and of course we ended up keeping the later one too. I have to say I do find the older car is the more enjoyable of the two to drive and it is rather more economical on fuel too.

I have noticed that where the P80s were once commonplace it is now rare to see them. However a K reg. 850 estate a 2 litre 10 valve model in a rather nice shade of green passes our front door a few times a week; It must be one of the oldest still on the road. There's also an 850 T5 estate within a quarter of a mile of us too.

So if you see a turquoise V70 Tdi in the Hull area it's most likely mine.

When I was in my 20s I owned a 245 which was very untrendy for the time.

I'm another. I bought mine, a 2000 V70 Classic 2.4 Petrol Auto, in 2016 as a stop-gap replacement for our late-lamented 745, which we had owned for over 18 years.

Yesterday, more than five years later, it passed it's sixth MOT in my ownership with no more than a replacement tyre and adjustment to the handbrake. In that time, apart from routine servicing, all that it has required is to strip and rebuild the rear brakes.

Not bad for a 21 year old car now well into six-figure mileage that cost me just £550, and further testament to the build quality and longevity of these fine motor cars which others have spoken of.

Our cars are, in my view, at least as 'green' as the newest EV costing 100 times more. There is much more to economical and eco-friendly motoring than the nature, amount and price of the fuel used.

Nice to see so many people are still keen to own P80 Volvo's .Had the C70 coupe for its mot yesterday passed with no advisories.I sold it a year ago and have not long bought the car back. Parts replaced - passenger seat and brake caliper and steering rack plus gave it a good clean. I don't think the car was cleaned since i sold it. Some may say that's too much work for a old car. With regards to the steering rack replaced it with the car on axle stands i think i am getting too old for things like that- 62 years young and started when i was 16.

My P80 is the 2.4 n/a 140 10 valve model[in classic trim],granted it's no fireball but nor does it disgrace itself. I wouldn't mind a go in a T5 but as is if I want a bit more speed/grunt than the P80 can give I'll use either my 960[2.9] or my Omega[3.0] and they're plenty fast enough for me these days. There is another P80 within a mile of me same colour[silver] as mine same year too[2000] also a petrol although that's as much as I know of it and within a quarter mile of me there's a D5 P80[R reg] auto in Turquoise.

I was surprised at how few S70s there are left. I know they were less popular than the estates, but even so. I loved my manual T5 one, and only sold it to get an 850R. I'm sure I would have loved it just as much if it was a tdi or a 2.4 non turbo - they are such nice cars to drive.

My S70 went to a garage who bought it off me via eBay. I haven't seen it advertised since, but if you want a nice one and see this for sale at a reasonable price, go for it. Reg is P5 OAE
