Just a quick update been looking at cars over the week and couldn’t find anything we both liked but then a bmw compact come up for sale right by our house.

It’s a 53 plate automatic full history I’m going to use it and the wife will use the xc90, wasn’t planning on a bmw but only paid £1200 for it 12 months m o to so we said we’ll run it until next year then buy a lot newer car maybe a v40 but at least we have a car for now.

Thanks everyone for the replies

What’s a BMW Compact? Never heard of one of them.

I adore BMW vehicles and have yet to own one!

I may get an E38 or e39 (5 or 7 series upto 2002).

They were acceptably built but not well.

After these dates BMW have had more than their fair share of time on Watchdog on the BBC and other sites for cam shaft failures, I let manifold problems and cooling plastic components that fail.

Modern BMW and Audi are junk with many design floors.

You don’t need to be rich to drive a BMW, just like spending cash on overpriced junk!

Yes at £1,200 quid that’s cool! Also probably relatively reliable at that year (more so than the new ones!).

Is that the 1.8 engine hatch?

I think the compact is the one before the 1 series, it’s the 2.0 petrol model so it pulls pretty well to be fair.

Not had one before but my wife is on about running it into the ground if it proves reliable I’ll service it myself and do bits but not what I normally do like change gearbox oil etc.

It seems like a lot of car for the money but time will tell.

Quite a rare sight nowadays, it's almost like an E46 coupe with the boot chopped off... Probably BMW's first hatchback in years.

3 Series Compact uses rear-wheel drive (instead of front-wheel drive).

go get yourself 2 BIG bags of sand for the boot for winter

add in a small folding shovel and a couple of Smaller bags of sand if theres snow.

the Weight Over the rear axel = will stop you ending up with it overtaking the front end when its wet/snow
the smaller bags and shovel,, you will thank me when you realise you Can crack open a small bag ,use the shovel to spread the sand under the rear wheels when it gets stuck in snow,,
oh and use 3rd to pull away (does it Have a "winter/snow" button on the auto box??)

Ah yes, I know the one you mean. A family friend had one for many years actually, now that I think of it! Smart looking car it was too.

The 3-series Compact was essentially a shortened 3 series as a hatchback. It pre-dates the 1 series.
