MoT requires both a CAT to be present on the car, and for the car to pass a static emissions tests.

It's possible to individually map any car to pass the static emissions tests without a CAT. The CAT is really just there to allow manufacturers to pass the static emissions tests without worrying about subtle variations in manufacturing, ambient conditions, component wear, etc.

But cars still have to have a CAT present to pass an MOT.

Of course the only way to "test" the latter is by visual inspection.

Some put in an "empty" CAT to make it look like there is one present.

Some use a "sports CAT" with lower cell density.

Some use a magic hand shake with the MOT tester...

There are usually some listed on ebay which are cheap, but whether they actually work???

When I had a custom exhaust made for my old 940 turbo a couple of years ago I was quoted £100 for the 100 cell cat. Not sure what price they are now, but it would be worth asking your local custom exhaust place for a price.

no 850 turbo monitors the cat efficiency anyway, theyve only got 1 o2 sensor so no need to map any out.

So, does this mean I don't need to replace it, I can just use a straight pipe?

Apparently, Volvo no longer list it as a replacement part, but eBay seems happy to offer up all manner of options:

Am I missing something here?

That's the way I read it and personally wouldn't bother if you can get it through the Mot.
You can completely negate the risks of some other **** trying to steal your Pussy that way.

So, eBay lists this:

Does anyone have any option on whether it'll get through the MOT and/or not trigger the Service Engine light?

Have no idea if these work or even if it would fit but would recommend having a look at the seller's feedback before making a decision.
