Volvo is recommending in slippery conditions to manually put the gearbox in 3rd gear, which reduces the torque when moving from standstill.

Will be interesting when I get my s90 back as to how it copes on snow with 20 inch summer tyres.

If conditions get really difficult (and only then) you can select Off-Road mode using the Drive Mode selector if fitted.

This forces all-wheel drive on, disables stop-start and engages LSC (Low Speed Control) and HDC (Hill Descent Control). You really need to read the manual to understand when and how to use it and its limitations.

As it happens, I used it last weekend at a friend's house to descend a long, steep driveway that was covered in thick mud from building work he's having done.

The answer is "it won't", and you only need to slide into a curb at 5mph to write off a wheel or the front suspension. Unless you genuinely need to get to work or healthcare or something it's not worth the hassle.

Fit winter or all-seasons if you want to play in the snow, but even then you're at the mercy of other drivers.

4WD will get you going on the flat, but you're then in a two-tonne brick with pretty much zero control.

With winter tyres the D5 is an awesome snow monster provided the snow isn't deeper than the front bumper. I had winters on 20 inch wheels on mine and it was like there was no snow at all.

I can't afford new alloys or tyres at the minute otherwise I would.

The cheapest I have seen a winter tyre for 20 inch rims is £250 a tyre and there was only one option to choose from.

I wish manufacturers would offer the option of All Season tyres as original fitment from the factory.

Agreed - the first thing I did was sell the brand new OEM tyres, and put on a new set of Cross Climates. Then swapped that car 2 months later, and the dealer then swapped my whole alloy/tyre set to the new one so that I could keep CC's on my new (same model) T8 and not buy another set!

Agreed. I previously have replace my last V90 and ran with Cross Climates. Timely when we have had sub 7 degree temps and snow in March.

However, I'm now with new car with 3k miles, sat with summer and cannot justify the change as my working and daily commute requirements don't justify it, as the car is sat on the drive 4 days of the 7
