I`ve run motorbikes for years now with Slime or Gloop in the tyres.
i used to think that the solution ran around inside the tyre and settled back to the lowest point when the wheel had stopped spinning. This is not true . The solution forms a coating over the inside of the tyre where it then remains. The critical thing is quantity. Too little and it doesn`t work . Too much and then there is a possibility of pooling at the bottom of the tyre. The tyre does take a little longer to warm up. The manufacturers do say it won`t seal around the rim but i had one wheel on the car that would not hold correct pressure. So a shot of Gloop went in and after about a week of short , up to temp journeys it at last sealed. It`s good for the life of the tyre so the first a tyre fitter will know about it is when he takes the tyre off to fit your new one. As for balancing , there are two schools of thought. Put the solution in , run the tyre up to temperature a couple of times and then have the wheel balanced. Secondly , have the wheel balanced and then add the CORRECT amount of solution as it will have nil effect on the balance once it has coated the inside. |

I had this problem and i had the tyres removed and then cleaned up both edges of the rim that contact the tyres with wet and dry-[only around - 1 1/2'' wide], you've got to do a good job on the rubbing down, so it's smooth and even, any deep scores or grooves- bit of body filler, then around 3 coats of wheel silver or similar, leave to dry at least overnight, and on the 3 wheels i did like that no probs, just on the 1 i didn't do yet. and if the faces of your wheels are nice and tidy, why fully renovate them.

Any decent tyre fitter will always clean the inside of the rim, normally with a wire brush, but if there are signs of paint peeling it needs doing with coarse sandpaper or emery cloth.
If done properly there will be no need for any sealant, just normal tyre soap to aid fitting. There may be a slight leak from the valve, so insist new ones are fitted. However if alloy wheels are badly corroded they can become porous, another cause may be corrosion on the inner rim, easy to see when the tyre is off... Sometimes a new wheel is the only option, but I would be inclined to go back to the fitters and watch what they do. Volvoboy mentions some Gloop sealer that goes inside the tyre, idea being that it seals any puncture...beware though, some tyre dealers will not attempt to repair any tyre with this stuff inside

my boss got me to do 4 sets of his race wheels like that one time and I swore never again ... a bit of elbow grease does go a long way to saving a few quid but the issue for most people is they don't have various different rims just knocking about, they just have the 1 set, which currently has the tires fitted. and getting them off and back on again yourself is nigh-on impossible
