ok so you will have at least 50 percent old fluid still. either do a couple more drain and fills or flush it out (can be done DIY, may stain the drive)

Thought I would post an update to this. Another year, another 6k miles and it is exactly the same, no better no worse so I am now of the mind that it is by design, abet a little bit more then it probably should be.

I have noticed that if I enable cruise, even at 30 mph it goes away which has convinced me this is a software 'feature'. For now it will be getting another gearbox fluid change this week as part of its regular service and it will continue to be my daily driver.

Thought I would post an update as I have had a couple of PM's regarding this thread. Another year, now with 144k miles recorded and it is exactly the same, no better, no worse. Still drives well and I put it in cruise if it gets annoying.

Would really love an update on this problem. I believe I am experiencing the same issue. RPMs oscillate every three seconds when in 5th gear and 37mph or so.

@mcfe - It is still exactly the same, no better, no worse. It is the family 'daily driver' and usually does about 20 miles a day.

If yours is the same as mine and if you enable cruise then it stops doing it, and it only does it between 30 and 50 mph then like me you should probaby put it down as a 'feature'.

Yes it does disappear with cruise control.

However I recently did experience something which I am not sure if it was Torque Converter or ETM.

I had slowed down to 12mph and completely let off the gas whilst I fiddle with something, without me doing anything the RPMs rose from 1500 to maybe 2000. Now, I have the famous for failing magnetti marelli etm, so it is plausible it was the culprit that one time.

Anyway, what is the color of your fluid?

Bought a 2006 2.4 diesel with automatic transmission few weeks back and I noticed same thing as described in this topic. Thought it is some sort of transmission fault but it appears from your replies that it is completely normal, thanks for sharing and keeping this thing updated.

If I am to be completely honest, and without much expertise, I don't usually think it's normal. Either it is a software bug OR an actual mechanical problem with the Torque Converter clutch or signs of worn fluid.

Had a few more PM's so... yes it's still doing it, yes it is still driving just fine. Now due for a 'service due' message which I will book in with my garage soon and I'll get them to change both the engine and gearbox fluid.

If anything ever changes I'll post details here but otherwise if there are no further updates from me then it's all just fine and still providing useful daily service.
