Default 1971 142E Hazard / turn relay location

New member here; just acquired IPD founder’s 1971 142E development car; while generally well-sorted, hazard / turn relay needs to be replaced. Haven’t been able to find either the part number or its location.

Thank you for any guidance !

Hi 'Jacques1960'. It is now a very long time since I had anything to do with the 1 series cars, but reference to my Haynes manual gives the following information.

"In many models the direction indicators can be used as simultaneous emergency warning flashers at the push of a switch. In models with the ribbon type speedometer this switch will be found, if fitted, above and between the cigarette lighter and the fan switch. Incorporated with the switch is the flasher relay and the whole assembly is a click fit in the dashboard, removable from the rear."

In quoting the above, I'm making the basic assumption that US spec cars had the same arrangement as UK models. I'm afraid that it doesn't give a part number.

I hope this is of some assistance to you.

Regards, John.

Thank you - this tracks; not sure how one gains access to the rear of the hazard switch, but I will contort myself like a pretzel to investigate !

Not overly complicated; but, you will likely end up with scraped skin on your wrists. By removing the fuse box access cover you should be able to reach up and access the back to the hazard flash switch which has the turn signal flasher unit mounted on the back of it. A little telescopic inspection mirror can help with seeing things; but, once your hand is up there you are going by feel since your hand will mostly block you from seeing anything.

If needed, I can post a picture. In the absence of a picture, the heater fan switch, cigarette lighter and the hazard switch form a triangle just to the left of the heater / ventilation controls. The fan switch is bottom left of triangle, the cigarette lighter is bottom right of the triangle and the hazard flasher switch is at the vertex of the triangle.
