A tale of woe a day before a seaside break.
You know how it is everything is going smoothly when the car your going away in returns home courtesy of the wife driving when she says Oh a light has just come up on the dash "power system service" or something with a red light.
So our V70 D5 P2 2002 model (one careful owner) 158,000 that we've had for 18 months has suddenly decided that it's time to play silly sod's. Flat battery indicates (after reading reports from you guys) that it's possibly the regulator or the alternator and further more the pulley is a seperate item. Seems we were lucky as it wouldn't have gone much further, anyway what now l ask, I'm struggling to know the best course of action. Removing the alternator would tell me which one to buy as there seem to be various alternatives according to car outlets and then of course there's the pulley removal tool to buy. Saundersfoot seems a long way off at the moment as we should be setting off from Worcestershire on Saturday morning. The alternative is press my good old Wentworth 940 into service to do the 170 miles complete with 2 dogs and shopping for the week. She's actually semi retired but if this gets no better then l shall be looking for replacement and it will be a 940........................ Anyone had issues with alternator replacement? .........fault codes etc. Your's in anticipation |

I had the same message when my XC90 alternator failed, the battery drained quickly once the warning came up
Give these guys a call and speak to Jack, his knowledge is second to none

You've already hit on the answer. 170 miles is nothing to the 940. Enjoy your break and worry about the V70 later.

A new alternator will come with the pulley so I wouldn’t worry about that. The choice of quality is up to you. I’d avoid anything from makes you haven’t heard of there’s a lot of rubbish out there. Replacing the alternator isn’t a bad job on these if your handy. I’d just check the belt, tensioner and idler pulley whilst your in there. Battery light will go out when it sees proper charge voltage again. You can easily check charging with a multimeter also.

Happy for the starter/alternator shop near me when my '02's alternator died.
It's preferable to have your own Volvo alternator rebuilt and returned to you. Check your region for current, locally available services. Upholstery, radiator/cooling and glass are other examples. |

I'm capable of sorting the V70 as l've always serviced my own cars and restored an Amazon. Just never had to deal with laptop driven transport as it gets pricey and perhaps unneccessary in my world. Plus with 24 hrs to sort it and living in a rural area with limited outlets the decision is made...............thanks for the support. |

According to the service records it had a pulley, idler and belt 20.000 ago. Onwards & upwards l guess, these cars seem to have a good reputation especially the earlier ones and this one never uses a drop of oil but with so many electronics you're always wondering what's next. |

We did go down to Saundersfoot in the 940 though as was decided and it went without a hitch as predicted. Thanks to all for your kind comments and help. I'm not so familiar with the V70 although our's is a 2002 with no bells or whistles and one owner from new 158,000 on the clock and burns no oil and has a clean engine bay so it's been well looked after. |
