Default Manual stuck in 3rd gear

On approaching a roundabout yesterday, i was trying to drop from 3rd to 2nd but it seemed stiff. With extra force, the gearstick moved but the car stayed in 3rd. Now the gearstick feels loose. How does the gearstick connect to the transmission?
Is there any point in me removing the centre console to access the gearstick mechanism from above, or is it more likely to have broken at the transmission end?
The car is a manual 2010 XC60 Diesel.

Any suggestions appreciated.

I had same problem, but mine was stuck in reverse, so tow job it was.
The gear lever is connected with the gear box via 2 cables. Apparently the cable sometimes detaches from the connector, can happen on either side. I took mine to the dealer who fixed it under Volvo select warrantee, otherwise it would have been a 900GBP bill. Both cables were replaced, difficult to get at so will take a couple of hrs dismantling and assembly time.
I thought I had just been unlucky with this fault, worrying to hear it happens more often, design weakness...
Good luck

Thanks GJRLM. It is booked into a local garage tomorrow. I will tell them what you have said. I don't have the time (or the fitness) any more to climb under the car to fix it myself.
