Default Instantaneous Vs Average

I have been watching the mpg recently on a few motorway runs and although i consistently get 35+ mpg for the majority of the journey on the instantaneous setting ..... when i look at the average it will be around the mid 20's ???

I used to have the same query, then I realised when I am going heavy with my foot I'm usually concentrating on the road rather than checking out the instant reading (probably 1km/L during those exciting moments)

The average reading is more indicative of your real world consumption figure...

TBH the onboard computer that works out fuel consumption is a fairy tale ... wouldn't worry about it. If the fuel consumption does interest you then do it manually on a brim to brim filling, its the only accurate way due to the consumption programming on the XC90 being done by Hans Christian Andersen.

Spot on!

I put diesel in my XC90 when it needs it and accept , as I have done from the start , that it is not an economical car.

Anyone worrying about fuel consumption on one of these has bought the wrong car.

My 03 XC90 will sometimes report over 40 mpg on a steady (65-70) motorway run but calculating it on a brim to brim - it's 35 on a very good day.

Urban mix is says 32-34 but at the pumps its 29-30.

My 15 XC60 however reports 36 mpg but at the pumps it's 37+

i.e. you need to calculate it on a brim to brim.

You, Sir, deserve more recognition for this line.

That's the maximum limit, so would actually be quite reasonable when decelerating from speed
