Electric mirrors and replacing the glass
Hello people,
I'm a youngster who has been converted to the joys of 940 estate ownership (despite my friend's insistence that I need a souped up Vectra, for sure I do!!) - please help! Very recently someone clipped my driver's side wing mirror at great speed - very nearly a high speed head on collision - luckily they just hit the mirror. The glass shattered in my face and popped out into my lap - amazingly the body coloured unit appears undamaged on the outside, but what about the gubbins inside it, behind where the glass should be? It doesn't appear damaged, but will I be able to get replacement glass or will I need a whole unit (which to get colour coded I'm thinking a dealer, and I know it will cost a ridiculous amount). Any advice much appreciated. If I appear stupid it's because I am no tech - I'm a muso not a mechanic!! Thanks very much for any help, kind regards Sam 1996 940 SE 2.3 Turbo estate |

Hi,
If you want to be brave, a new Main Stealer Unit would set you back about £130 or so... I know as one day some "White Van Man" decided after checking out his window there was enough room to part open his door. I very nicely shaved the whole mirror unit off the near side. . . However, once you have put the unit back in place, check the working of the electric adjustment. If it buzzes and moves the round circular holder, adjuster then you could get away with a new mirror only. You can always get a replacement from a breakers too and paint it up yourself.. If a replacement is required.. Des. . .

You could get replacement from GSF - the mirror unit complete is only £60ish + VAT. You could swap the colour coded bits over...?
Alternatively, if its all working, the mirror glass is about a tenner from GSF. http://gsfcarparts.com Good luck!

Thanks a lot for your help and advice. Much appreciated. The motor on the mirror seems to work so I'm ordering just the glass! Thanks again

try a heat gun to soffen up the glue that holds the mirror to the plastic, careful not to melt the plastic though

Removing Door Mirror Glass
Hello sarahV70,
I cannot comment on the V70, if that is the car you have. It may be that Mr. Sam's advice about melting the glue is correct, but, on my 940, with heated mirrors, each mirror glass is held in by two nylon stalks with a ball on each end of each stalk which locate into sockets on the plastic moulding on the back of the mirror glass. My nearside mirror doesn't heat up so I managed to pop the mirror glass out of the housing on a wreck in a breaker's yard by squeezing my fingers between the mirror edge and the mirror housing. I haven't yet summoned up the courage to try it on my own car but I need to check out the electrical supply to it first as I may not need to pop the mirror glass out. |
