Ask your man who did the job whether he fitted new inner tie rods.

This is the diesel section, so I make any post as general as possible, because most folks reading it will have a different model or engine. The solution is a classic case of, "If in doubt, read the instructions", as they do vary.

Here is the youtube clip

Think it shows the noise but i cant pinpoint it. I know that it has changed but it may not be related to the power steering. |

Yes I agree definitely sounds like a bearing/ pulley in it early stages of failure and as said most likely the alternator clutch.

Thanks for reply.
I know between 40 - 50 secs I am focused on alternator but do you not hear the same noise earlier in the clip? Also how do I check the alternator clutch for failure? Thanks in advance |

Yes you can hear the noise earlier in the clip. Checking is easy by removing the auxiliary belt and making sure the pulley free wheels by hand. Cheshired5 has a video of exactly what to do which will help you and can be found on you tube I'm sure he will post the link for you. It is a common part to wear out. I would also recommend you check the auxiliary belt idler and tentioner for noise also. How many miles are on the car? These items should be changed at cam belt service. If yours has not had a cam belt yet I would also be weary of cam belt idler and tentioner depending on millage. I believe the interval to be 108,000. Be aware that it is not the cambelt that normally breaks it's the auxilay tentioner that normally goes so check it and if in dought have it replaced.

The thread is here with the link for the video http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=211050 Alternator pulley test advice is from around 7min 30 and it includes a clip of what mine sounded like, which is much more extreme. The video contains hopefully all the tips and instructions for the job. Any questions, fire away.......

With my problem, the optimum revs for making the worst screech was idle up to around 2000, so you revving up would quieten the screech and just make the engine noisier.
