740 track control arm outer bush
Just wondering how easy or not to replace these cone bushes on my 87 740.
Anyone tackled these? Thanks all. |

Really easy if you have access to a hydraulic press. I wouldn't bother trying if you can't get access to one though.

When you say outer bush, I assume you mean the ones nearest the wheel, next to the ball joint?
I think your thinking of the inner ones Chris? Outer ones are reasonably simple, biggest part of the job is removing the old ones, they weld themselves to the bottom arm. Undo the bolt on the front of the arm, remove the bolt at the rear of the arm, remove the arm. With a suitable chisel or old screwdriver, scrap off the old bush, the metal part of it will weld itself to the arm, and you will think the bush is gone, but its now When you have the remains of the old bushes removed, the new ones will fit in with very little pressing, hand pressure should be enough to start the bolt at the front of the arm

I meant the outer one, I just missed out the bit where you have to scrape the guts out from the degraded old one haha. I found it easier to remove both the control arm and radius arm on both sides to make it easier to chip out the rust.

Thanks all. Done, years test ok. Needs a bit of weld round one of drain holes in chassis for next years.
That'll do me! |
