I'll see what distributors I've got lying around and try to get some photos.

I saw it first time round Luke, the problem is they're not intended to be adjustable so any adjustment gained (or even percieved to be gained) will be cancelled out by the EZK unit to keep the timing where it thinks it should be. Easiest to leave the dizzy alone unless it's leaking oil past the seals which you know more about than me having done several.

Thanks for the kind words, but i still seem to be healthy, and i can pick up a washing machine to load it into the van.
I'm a bit confused about the distributor, as i ca slacken two bolts and rotate the body. There are timing marks, and slightovement seems to make a difference to the engine running. I hear what you say about the ecu compensating and i guess i need to find out a bit more about the ignition I want the tools as i am negotiating for a 240 estate that is in a farmers field and that probably will need an engine overhaul. |

In my experience having the correct tools makes these sort of jobs much more straightforward. The crank pulley retainer, Volvo part number 9995284, enables you to focus on undoing and tightening the crank bolt safe in the knowledge that nothing is likely to slip or get damaged. Definitely worth it.
I have found it doesn't tend to fit at exactly TDC though which means you end up having to re-align everything before fitting the new belt. Not too much of a problem. I have also found that using the correct insertion tools for the front seals makes sense. They are designed to insert the seals without the edges flipping over or the springs getting misplaced which can happen very easily if you just drive them in with something roughly the right size. I've built my collection up over the years, thus spreading the cost. If you think you might need to replace the front seals at the same time as the doing the belt; which can make sense, then a generic cam sprocket tool can also be very helpful for holding the cam and intermediate pulleys while you remove and refit them. Otherwise, you can use the old belt for this if you have to. |

Crankshaft locking tool
I just thought I'd "pop up" on this thread.
Postage was around £4 each way the last time I sent it out so it will now be more expensive. (Thank you, Royal Mail.) The donation to charity is optional. I'm not too fussed about how long the tool is on loan for, within reason, so you could borrow it once and do both cars' timing belts in one fell swoop.

Crankshaft holding tool
Thanks for the offer, but I decided to buy the tool £38 inc. postage on Ebay. It seems it is going to take at least two weeks before I get a chance to view the 240. It's locked on a farm, and I'm having to negotiate through a 3rd party. Trying to get 4 people to agree on a date and time is a nightmare, especially as one went to America for a week. It seems the owner gave up on the 240 because of body rust, but the engine and many other bits should be fine. I'll post some photos when I get a chance to view it.
I bought the crankshaft tool because I have decided I want to flip 240s and 740s if I get a chance to buy them cheaply. It's probably worth replacing the cam belt on them before selling them. i'm in Hampshire, so when I get the tool I can help anyone local to change their belt. I'll probably buy a valve depressing tool and a box of shims. The 740 has got what I think is tappet rattle, so I can fix that with the tool. |

The crankshaft holding tool has arrived at last so if anyone is in East Hants and wants to use one, then send me a pm.
Some of the videos I've watched include the replacement of 3 oil rings while the belt is being replaced, is this something I should be doing? |
