Default volvo v40 abs hub bearing replacement 2012 D2

Hi all, I was wondering if you can help me out with some information,
My ABS lights came on a few weeks back and I had it diagnosed and the guy said if it comes back on it needs an ABS change on the rear driver side. And of course, it came back on. After I left to change the ABS calls me that it has a mechanical failure and that the whole hub bearing needs replacing, also said that only VOLVO manufacture this and it will cost around 400£. Now I am looking for advice if this price is correct or should I take it to somebody else for a second opinion. Any advice would be appreciated

Your mechanic is correct that the rear hub needs replacing because the ABS sensor is built directly into the hub. No need to pay £400 for a new hub though, You can get high quality ones from SKF, Meyle etc for £70-£100 online. SKF have a large history with Volvo, so I'd go for that brand.

Below is from Volvo's parts catalog for V40. Here are the part numbers highlighted in red for the rear hub. The correct part number is dependent your vehicle chassis number range. You can simply go to ebay and search for "SKF" + the part number, and you'll likely find the correct part, but they also have the compatibility checker on the listing...

Chassis numbers up to 15447 needs part number 31277680.
Chassis numbers from 15448 and beyond need part number 31406755.

Your Volvo chassis number is the last six digits of your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN number)

If you dont buy genuine volvo you are likely to get the same problem again as it might well not have the magnetic seal in the back of the bearing , just a standard rubber one , seen that happen a few times .
Are you sure the sensor itself is ok?

This one says it has magnetic on it I really don't have 400£ to fix it with original parts

the sensor is bolted to the hub with a wire on it ,,, the magnetic ring in the bearing is what it senses , the fault could be either ...
