Default 2000 V70 Classic Transmission

I have just purchased a V70 2.4 2000 Classic with 89K (verified) on the clock.

I've just retired and thought that I would treat myself to a car that I've always fancied. I have owned a couple of Volvos over the years - the first being a 1971 142E in Canada. In any event I wonder if anyone could enlightened me on the following issue.

The transmission is automatic. When I come to a stop in Drive and keep my foot on the brake, the rev's rise and fall causing a slight judder. It strikes me that this isn't normal as I think that there should be a disconnect between the engine and transmission until the throttle is applied and the revs reach a point where the transmission re-engages.

Is this a sign of a need for a service adjustment or (dread) the sign of a more serious problem.

Thanks

First thing to check - ATF level and condition.

The autobox is designed to go in to neutral when stationary with the footbrake applied, try using the handbrake instead and it won't drop out of gear.
There is a software update available from Volvo to disable the auto neutral feature, but it's cheaper to use the handbrake.

I would also start with checking the fluid level, do this after a run of twenty or thirty miles with the engine still running using the hot side of the yellow dipstick, if it needs fluid make sure you use the correct grade oil (JWS3309) as the wrong type of auto fluid in these boxes will ruin them - Mike

Chris,

Thank you for your reply. I'm having the Aircon checked - recharging gas I hope. I will have the fluid changed if possible or topped up.

Mike,
I appreciate your advice and will have the ATF fluid changed.

Thanks, Eugene
