Our (UK & Eire) silly RHD cars escape the crazy mainland prices, thankfully.

We're also blessed that a very high proportion of OEM parts used were of UK origin, with vast amounts of aftermarket stuff (often made in same factory) still sitting on shelves. Cheap parts & lax MOT (compared to continental tests) means cheaper classic motoring for us.

(At least, that appears to have been the received wisdom of the car buying public, based on the attention to servicing and upkeep of most 240s).

Fortunately we're getting to the stage where the plasterer's wagons have dissappeared and the one-owner garage kept examples are being sold on, so the average quality of the 240s *on the market* now is far higher than it was ten years ago.

This does, unfortunately, give a false impression to vendors of sub-average cars that Volvo 240s in general are increasing in value: The average value of the fleet is increasing, but this is due to the progressive removal of the lower value examples.

So we get poor to mediocre cars looking for average money and better than average cars looking for concours money, none of which sell and perpetuate the false high values seen in the marketplace.

Haven't seen evidence of any non-historic 240 selling for more than £4k.
I think that is probably right - a non-historic 240 would have to be as-new to make £6,000. £4,000 isn't a bad price for a 30 year old car anyway.

I have been keeping an eye on this one. The auction attracted just one speculative bid of £3,500 in the last few minutes - it didn't make its reserve. How disappointed the seller must be, but perhaps that is a fair reflection of the market?

:-)

£3000 start.
Still probably got unrealistic reserve, but gets more bidders involved.
Might as well have a £1 start.

It didn't get many bidders last time, which must have been a bit embarrassing.

Thats a lie. Replaced twice with a non functional unit, it would appear.

Maybe not a lie at all, the odmoter has been belly up for many years with seemingly different speedo heads fitted - the speedo may well have still displayed speed but not increased the mileage on the odo, a common problem on 7/9xx models of the same year and just for fun, that Model Year uses a unique speedo head. Other speedos can die but the favourite for the odo and/or trip meters not working is some doofus resetting the trip while the car is moving - this breaks the internal mechanism on the trip and/or odometer causing it to cease working.
However, the speedo usually functions until the capacitors die and contaminate the custom speedo/stepper motor drive chips.
