Default 2012(12) XC60: can reversing rear-parking camera be fitted?

Hi all,

I have a 2012(12) XC60 with factory fitted 7" sat-nav that plays DVDs too: I was wondering if anyone knew whether I can connect a reversing/rear-view park camera to it myself or through an independent fitter.

I spoke to Volvo and they tell me I can't do it myself and that I would need them to provide camera etc.

I tried searching to find the answer but I'm a touch confused. Please could you assist!

thanks

Went through this with my 2011 S60, same setup as you.

Volvo price fitted, between £750 and £900 in local Volvo dealers. Has lovely distance lines on the image that also move when you turn the wheel.

Third party product that produces image on the 7" screen, over £600. Has lovely lines to show you how far away things are but they are static.

I bought a £30 thing from Maplin and fitted it myself. No lines at all.

Image doesn't appear on the big screen, but on a tiny 2" screen, which happens to fit snugly into the front cupholder. Ok, it's not as good as the real thing, and the wiring is a bit messy, but it is sufficient to tell me if I'm going to hit a toddler, and for a £600+ saving it cheers me up every time I look at it.

Hi, I've been quoted close to £1700 by Volvo.

I spoke to an independent Volvo specialist and he mentioned the OEM camera costs close to £600 and requires a control mechanism which costs a further £400 and how parts alone come to around £1200 if going down the OEM route.

Is your installation done using OEM Volvo parts?

I'm exploring aftermarket options purely because of how expensive OEM Volvo is proving. Just for the software activation they've quoted close to £100.

If you total up the individual component list prices, it does come out quite expensive, but actually, as I understand it, dealers get all the parts in a package at a much cheaper price.

If you look on accessories.volvocars.com and search on camera you will get how to fit the camera and also the part number for the kit.

Check with your dealer on the price.

I had my rear camera retro fitted by a Volvo main dealer prior to my purchase in Nov 2013 at a cost of £675.

If you look through the fitting instructions it is quite a complicated job but if you are so minded you could do it all yourself apart from the software upgrade.

Thanks all. Super advice!

Maybe there trying it on with me but it's a Volvo dealer quoting £1700 to install. I'm going to do what you suggested and try and source the parts myself: someone competent locally is able to install for £90-£100 and I'll get software done at Volvo dealer.
