Default side lights

Whwn I up graded my single headlights to twin the side light bulbs are blue
when switched on, is this OK for the MOT? don't want to get an MOT failure.

if they are producing a proper blue light they are illegal, if they are xenon as mentioned above and just have a blue hint to them they are fine

I've passed several MOTs (former as well as current cars) with LED sidelights that have a blueish-white hue. As above, displaying a blue light on your vehicle is a criminal offence as well as an MOT fail.

Front side lights need to show white light unless incorporated in a yellow headlamp !
Headlamps also need to show white or yellow light
Reason for rejection : An obligatory headlamp shows light that is not substantially white or yellow

Interestingly, that document doesn't say anything about side markers from what I can see.

I think the side markers were put on volvo's ( & some other cars) to comply with US lighting regulations.

As they aren't a legal requirement in UK or most of europe,(for cars) it probably doesn't matter whether they work or not for MOT purposes.

Although they are a legal requirment for large commercial vehicles.

Personally i think they look rather cool on the S40/V40 & make our cars look distinctive !

Side markers MUST show as a yellow light (as with any other lighting at the side of the car), white at the front and red on the rear (the reversing light isn't part of the MOT).

I have white LEDs in my sidelights and standard Osram Neolux headlights (cheapest Osrams on ebay). Never had an issue with the MOT with the sidelights and the Osrams give a really good light so I don't need to worry about upgrading to HIDs, halogen bulb tech has come a long way since I started driving!

Side markers are an 'obvious' for LEDs - I have white '12 x SMD' 501s in my Phase 2 V40's markers. Much brighter than the originals and the extra benefit of using less electrical current...
