Selekt Warranty Renewal - a good idea?
Hi there,
My 2018 XC90 T8, bought last year from Lookers, is coming to the end of it's Selekt Warranty and I've been quoted £1149 to renew it. Do people think it's worth taking; or are external warranties better value; or I can just put that money aside in case repairs are needed? Thanks! |

I had a 3 year after market warranty which expired and I couldn't find another one because of the mileage. I thought what is the worst that can happen? Well 7 weeks later I was at the dealer with a diagnosis of engine failure. All in I paid 11k to get it all sorted. At 11k I actually think I was the lucky one. Others on here have been quoted up to 18k for an engine swap. Others of course will be running cars successfully with no warranty. It really is a lottery and only you can make the decision what to do.

I wont keep hold of my T8 without having a warranty on it (one that covers things like ERAD and hybrid bits etc) due to how complex the car is and how much just about anything costs to fix if/when it does go wrong.
I will be extending the Volvo warranty if I decide to keep it past its 3 year point for sure but like Philip says, it all depends on your own personal attitude to risk.

You may never use it, but at least its there if something goes wrong. An £1,100 repair (cost of warranty) is peanuts on these cars, considering many dealers are £180 per hour in labour alone. It wouldn’t take long to spend what you pay for extended warranty. I’d go for it if I were you.

Be careful to read the details.
A new car warranty and the Selekt type warranties are often actual "Warranties" where parts that *start* to fail will be replaced. The majority of aftermarket warranties on the internet are in fact mechanical breakdown insurance - which only kick in when the part totally fails. I had an example of this 20 years ago with two similar cars, both Rovers, both with iffy gearboxes. One was under the manufacturer's approved-used warranty - box started to whine, it was rebuilt. One was under a MBI policy from a independent dealer, much as bought online, they judged that as the car was simply noisy that it wasn't covered at that time - it wasn't until my father was driving the car down the M1, lost drive and coasted to the hard shoulder (which no longer exists on that bit of the road...) that he was towed and the same rebuild paid for by the warranty firm.

Our 3 warranty also runs out in September and was wondering what to do having been used to the 5 year Hyundai warranty on our previous cars.
Heres my logic, our XC90 B5D does everything we need it to do with no compromises, we are used to keeping our cars for at least 5 years (Hyundai ownership). If we changed to another XC90 in September there are 2 issues, these being there is no longer a diesel available so looking at used so back where we started , and probably payout another £20k+ to change to a petrol model with lower spec or spec we don't want (massive alloys, sunroof) with the new model line up. Now I'm sure when the time comes I'll be at the dealers tutting and saying at least dick turpin wore a mask when robbing you but even the B5D is a complicated beast and disappointing as it is that Volvo don't do a longer OEM warranty the annual cost of renewing the warranty will out way the cost to change. |
