Default Clunking noise (front right) when steering

My S60 (2012 D3) has started making a clunking noise when applying steering. It comes from somewhere around the front offside wheel. I had to drive to Gatwick and back, so took it to a local garage for a quick look and they couldn't see anything obvious (apart from a worn boot for the offside track rod end). (They did the usual MOT "push, pull and spin the wheel" and had it up on ramps for 10 mins). It sounds louder in the car than it does from outside, and I can provoke the noise with the engine off with some vigorous movements of the steering wheel (but not as loud as when the power steering is running). Any ideas anyone? Anything in particular I should check? My nearest Volvo specialist is over an hour away... sadly.

Had the same noice in my car a few years ago. In my case the upper strut mount was worn out. Nothing too serious and it was not expensive to fix.

Hope this helps.

Many thanks. I think that sounds right. The noise has a 'spring' sound to it. It is booked in to the garage for next week so we'll find out then.

Any news about the sound? I'm curious what you found out.

Strut mount, broken spring or track rod end would be my guess.

+1 for strut top mount. I found mine by bouncing the suspension up and down.

If you are struggling with this open the door and use it as a big lever.

+1 on the strut top mount won't make any noise if it's unloaded like on the lift. A test drive in a car park at slow speeds and some full-lock manoeuvres. The noise will sound like a spring pinging and creaking as you turn.

Sounds very much like it (Strut Mount). Will report back when the garage takes it apart!

As suspected, it turned out to be the strut mount, £150 to change at an indie. The bearings inside the mount fail / go sticky, so the spring kind of jumps on the mount (apparently) as the steering is turned.
