Default 940 S turbocharger life expectancy

Hi. What sort of mileage would or should you expect from a factory fitted mitsubishi turbocharger as fitted to a 1995 940 and what are the most common failures, many thanks. Kevin

Hi,

Quarter of a million miles?
Cracks in the housing (from heat)?
Broken/leaking oil return pipe?
Flappy wastegate!?

Des. . .

I was told by a specialist who sold me a reconditioned turbo for my last 945, that the life expectancy of an average turbo is 100,000 miles. He said they usually fail due to a build up of carbon behind the turbine rotor on the exhaust side of the turbo, causing the turbine to seize up.
I assume he was fairly kmowlegable on the subject, as the company 'Marine Turbo Engineering' in Birkenhead, has the contract to re-build all the turbos for Stagecoach.

I would suggest though that the "average" turbo is found on a diesel engine, so I would have thought much more likely to get sooted up than on a petrol?

Another question- would you say the mitsubishi unit was as robust as the garrett used on the earlier cars? Kevin

I have read in one of the faqs that in their opinion the Mitsubishi is not as robust and long lived as the Garrett, will try and find and link to it for you

Edited, can't find it in faqs, must have read it on Swedishbricks. Have to say though I think the Mitsubishi is a water cooled one and have also read that water cooled is superior to oil cooled (Garret). I have just read on the faq that my Garret one should be allowed to cool down for 2 mins before switching off the engine but when I asked on the forum I was told I didn't need to allow it to cool down

You will see water pipes running to the Garrett as well... Follow the pipe from the header tank, it should branch off to the turbo.

It needs cooling down after a hard/fast run. Normal, everyday driving it isn't required.

My 940 Celebration LPT with the Mitsubishi has the original still running well at 193,000 miles. Plenty of low down torque and the engine still very quiet- no piston slap noises thanks to the side squirter oil lines. Still for sale if anyone wants a good one.

I'm with niloc on this - but even after a hard run, unless you drive it hard right up till you switch off the engine (nearly wrote "killed the engine", which this treatment would...) the gentle trickle through the last mile or so of your drive should suffice, expecially with a water-cooled unit. Older units would die if not left to spool down for two or three minutes as they were purely oil-cooled and would be unlubricated when the engine was shut off. Makes for a nice piece of sculpture though.
