Fuel Pump Issue
My daughter broke down last night in our 2002 2 litre V40 petrol. RAC thankfully got her going after running some tests and hitting the fuel tank! The diagnosis was a 'sticking fuel pump'. Today it started first time when I tested it, but now doesn't.
Question's are, is this a common failure and if I remove it (tank based?) is it going to be possible to clean and fettle it to get it going or are they a lost cause and needs replacing? Thanks people, being an old car (but great vehicle!), I need to keep costs down. |

The pumps are quite reliable on our cars, but they do fail from time to time. The good thing about our cars is that the fuel tanks are not metal and are actually made of plastic. So there is no issue like rust developing on the inside and clogging up the pump, like it happened on my 240.
There is a sort of mess filter at the very bottom of the sender unit, which prevent any large particles entering the pump, but it won't stop the smaller particles. When you remove the sender unit, check if it is dirty. I wouldn't worry about it too much though, as it normally clogs up on the diesels because of diesel bacteria in the tank. Replacing the pump with a brand new one, or even a second hand one, should solve your problem. I made a guide of how to replace the sender unit, but all the photos dissapeared. I will try to do the guide again and post it here if it helps. If you decide to go down the route of fitting a second hand pump and can't find one, let me know, as I have a spare one from a 2003 2.0

Fuel Pump
Hi Gatos,
I have spent most of the night poring over various posts, ebay etc. Thanks for your post, as my daughter rather depends on the car for her job, I think that my only option is to change the pump out. Ebay seems to be littered with 'pumps that will fit a V40' yet they don't look anything like the pump in the howto's/guides. From what I have seen, you appear to be very knowledgeable with these 40's and I would much rather get the pump from you and have confidence. How much would you be asking for it and to get it to me at BA15? And when do you think I can get it? Thanks |
