Fuel pump regulator/relay issue
Hello All, to preface this question I would like to say that I have never really owned a volvo before. Anyways, I am going to be purchasing a 1980 Volvo 245. The car can run, but only when the fuel pump regulator is activated by hand. The owner put in a new fuel pump relay, but it still will not activate. Does anyone know what the issue could be?

A good choice for a shaggin woagon.
The 245 will carry a three foot wide bed in the load area. A mattress without a base would allow more room for artistry ... I have no idea what a fuel pump regulator might be. I expect someone will be able to help you. Sorry pal. Your choice of ID just begged for a shaggin reply. But relax, this is a serious supportive website. Someone will have a practical Volvo mechanics answer for you. . Last edited by Stephen Edwin; May 11th, 2016 at 21:23. |

Thanks Stephen, thought the name suits the 245 quite well. Hopefully I will get a point in the right direction!

Also check fuses. I think its fuse 6 for the fuel pump, this often causes issues as later plastic fuses tend to melt down! Originally they were ceramic. Sometimes just a 'wiggle' of the fuse will suffice to get them going, but obiously a temp 'fix'.
Fuel pump relay for fuel injected models. Being a 1980 I guess itll be a k-jet injected (mechanical injection). Fuel pump relay is situated behind the glove box. Easiest access is to remove the glove box. Just 8 screws and pull the hole thing out. You can get to it by reaching under the dash on side too..... Mechanical injected relays should be green. Later EFI ones had a white one. So check it has the correct replacement. Have a look at this thread: In particular post 6 by Clifford which explains how to temporarily by-pass the relay 'forcing' the fuel pump to run This could be a tell-tale' for you http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=119073

The Green relay needs pulses down the red/white wire from the coil to close and run the fuel pump ... it needs an ignition live , and earth and a constant live i believe from memory .

Here's a load of info, including instructions on how to wire in an additional relay to take some load off the original -which are prone to failure because of overloading. Always carry a spare!
