Top Engine Mount
I have just notice on the service sheet of my car the comment "top engine mount starting to split".
Now this was not mentioned to me when I picked the car up so a few very quick question. On a 2 year old S60 at 60k miles, should this happen? Would this be a warranty item? Is it actually nothing to worry about? Is it something that happens over time so would probly wait another 12k miles until the next service? What would happen if it failed? Thanks |

It's a very common thing on the S60. Mine has done 62k (51 plate) and I had to replace it last month. It wont do anything horrible to the engine but you will notice the engine will move more in it's mounts and be more "jerky" when the drive it taken up and released, especially on an auto like mine! It can't really fail as it is a round metal hoop with rubber in the middle and the rubber just breaks up so the engine won't jump out the bonnet if it breaks totally!!
Yours should be covered by the warranty tho as the car is only a couple of years old. Try a searchy on it as I seem to think it is one of the many things with the S60 that appear to be engineered wrong. I don't think your dealership will quibble. It's not a big job and is quite easy to do yourself, I did it in about 45mins and I'm no mechanic. The mount itself is about £40 from Volvo or you can buy "uprated ones, I think Nordic sell them.

I have looked at mine a few times while working on misc stuff under the hood. It starting to split and my car only has 15k on it. I did replace it with the Evolve Blue bushing which is much firmer than the stock rubber one. I have a 6MT and the benefits of a firmer bushing are increased steering feel, slightly firmer and more crisp shifting and also, negatively, increased vibrations from the engine exhibited in the steering wheel, shifter and pedals. Evolve also sells a black bushing that is in between the stock and the blue if you want less vibrations felt.
It a simple task to do at your home. Just unbolt the top engine brace from the engine mount and strut towers. Then push out the stock bushing (it is somewhat pressed in, so you need a hammer/flathead screwdriver), by tapping on the outer most portion of the bushing, NOT the engine mount. The new Evolve bushing was split in half so there was no need to press anything back into the engine mount. One may also purchase a bushing from IPD as they have jsut started carrying them for replacement. Also Powerflex Bushs carries upgraded bushings for the large engine mount, the smaller rear bush, and the the engine mount bar/brace ends as the bar ends are connected with a bolt and rubber bushing if you feel the need to tighten everything else up in that area. If you choose to keep it stock, then yes I do believe it will be covered under warranty. There is also no urgent reason to replace it asap, so have it changed when ever you like. Kevin |

Well considering that I am am within 50 miles of 60,000 miles (where the warranty runs out) I am getting it changed under warranty in the morning.
