Default Breathers

I am concerned that the Breathers on my T5 are blocked. I found an American Website that was discussing this in a Forum. Every reply discussed changing the "PCV", which is a black box under the inlet manifold.

Just thought you might all like to know that the parts for this cost only £40!! Thats the new black box, manifold gasket and 10 off injector seals!

The old black box cannot be cleaned out thoroughly, as it's a sealed unit, and is made of plastic!

Is this the same as the flametrap or are they different components?

No, the Flame trap is at the bottom end of the breather hose, just before the Turbo Inlet. Apparently the Flametrap has been removed on post 95 models.

My 96 T5 certainly doesnt have one, but there is an electronic sensor of some description, but I dont know what it does or measures.

I'm just going out now to fit the new PCV black box. I'll post my findings after the job is done, so you can all judge what state yours will be in with a given mileage.

Job done......a little better now, but there is still a very small amount of mist coming from the dipstick tube when I take the dipstick out.I'm now wondering if this is normal for a 128,000 mile Volvo T5 engine.
The breather hoses were quite gungy, but far from blocked.

I will say though, having done the job, what a pleasure to work on these cars are!! I have done many jobs on many cars, and even restored a couple, but this Volvo has got to be the most thoughtfully put together car I've ever worked on, in fact even better than my Porsche 944!!
