Default Whoops I've done it again , Just bought another 144GL

Hi,

I've just bought another 144 GL , I now own nearly 20% of all 144GL in the UK according to the DVLA LOL :-)

I saw this car and was amazed at its condition and originality. only 59K on the clock and I bought it from the first owner, who's in his 80's

inside it's like new , a little bit of leather treatment to the seats and a polish and that will be it.

The exterior paintwork is original , it's not been out of a garage in the past 23 years. and it shows.

Bad bits

inner wheel arches will need doing , but the outers for the most part look to be OK. minor bit of rust to the very ends of the sills, little bit of rust showing below the front windscreen , which a is a bit of a worry. and bizarrely the sunroof paint has gone, apparently there had been a box stood on it :-(

Doesn't run, needs the fuel pump to be replaced, and needs to be commissioned , so breaks etc. here's hoping there won't be too many nasty shocks.....

hoping this won't break the bank

Plan is to Get it back on the road ASAP and then look to turn it into a show car, but use my other car as more of a daily driver.

I'll need to gen up on the marking , but I'd like to keep it as original a possible. any one know if you get more marks if it 90-95% original paint work ?

I'm thinking I'd like to conserve rather than restore it, but open to thoughts / suggestions on how to proceed.

It has the original Volvo windscreen , with running in sticker

It gets like an illness, doesn't it? You can't say no.
Not that I'm blaming you.
My vote is very much for preserving rather than restoring, its taken a long time to get it like this, to return it to showroom is like returning to Go on a Monopoly board!
Enjoy it,
Best regards,
James.

Mmmm nice stereo! Good colour, overall great car worn in nicely. Re-commission, sort out any rust, paint sunroof and drive! I've never cared for restored cars- much better when there's that aura of mystery you get from a well worn motor with a fat service history!

I agree with the above. A tidy well looked after car with a patina of use is much more appreciated than a full resto' Sort out the rust as it it is like cancer and will kill the car unless it is cut out and removed. DON'T use rust "remover" unless it is in the shape of an angle grinder or torch. It will come back to bite you in the ass. Having said all that you will probably need to have a full respray as it will be impossible to match up any new panels and will look a dogs breakfast.

Can you repost the photos of your 144. They no longer show up.

Yes Arcturus very well. He is a good Volvo Friend from Oporto and one of the owners of a 144GL.
The other is also from Oporto and had a very good exemple car in blue and the 3rd are from Viseu or near there and had a gold 144 GL, works but need a lot of work to be fine.
