I've had 4 volvos since 1979.
1st was a 240 estate petrol -198000 miles. 2nd was a 240 diesel -220000 miles -sold as a hay transporter on a farm (off-road. 3rd was a 740 diesel -cylinder head gasket went at 187,000, and big-end at 235000 miles. 4th is a 850 tdi, red manual diesel, currently being offered for sale/parts on this site since yesterday - 220,000 mile. Seems as if the ones I've had - all Volvo serviced - become too expensive and rusty beyond about 220000 miles! |

Nearly 1 million miles on 5 Volvo estates
I've had four so far since 1978, and am now on the 5th! All have had manual boxes. All bought second-hand with between 40 and 68K on the clock - i.e just run in!
1. 245 estate Petrol 213,000 miles - death due to rust! 2. 245 estate diesel 198,000 miles - sold on as an off-road hay carrier on a farm 3. 740 estate Diesel 238,000 odd miles - never right after a cylinder gasket failed at about 188,000 miles, then terminal big-end failure at about 238,000 miles 4. 850 tdi estate - still going at 220,000 miles, although the bodywork/suspension need fixing - currently on this site for repair/spares . My current one is a V70 D5. |

Mine rolled over 225k last week.
Since the last update (210k) it had a second-hand turbo (£150, plus 2 evenings to fit) at 217k after the original (I presume - nothing in the history to say it's had one before) failed spectacularly, both pneumatic engine mounts (~£170) at 224k, and I finally got around to replacing the clutch master cylinder which has been weeping since I bought it (into the interior, causing the position switch to fail, and the cruise to refuse to work!). I've never been that happy with the idle quality, and since I bought my VIDA/DICE rig, I've been using the injector diagnostics to keep an eye on that. All bar one of mine are out of spec (±3mm^3, IIRC), but one is much worse than the others. I'm going to perform a leak-off test ASAP, and then refer it to a diesel specialist if the results are nasty. So, it has given me a few bills in the past few months, and if I need an injector (or two) that won't be cheap, but each bill so far has been less than that month's fuel saving, and there is still a significant overall saving...plus, when it's done, it's done. The other saving grace is that lower mileage cars seem no better behaved - the D5s just aren't as "robust" as their petrol cousins. It's still worth it (and by a big margin) for a high mileage user. cheers James

Since I last posted on here my D24Tic has clocked up another 22 thou, now on 117,000, hasn't skipped a beat, all I've done is change the full synth oil every 6 months along with oil and fuel filters (and air filter occasionally)
