1998 940 Celebration fuel pump / sender
Hi guys, I'm looking for the fuel sender / pump for our 1998 940 Celebration 2.3 lpt which has been off the road for 10 years. Rust has gummed everything up. The p/n on the Bosch unit is 0580453420, I believe the S90/V90 also used the same unit in 97/98, not sure about earlier cars. But if anyone has anything that would get the old 940 going again, I'd appreciate it. Would need to be posted here to Dublin.

I've got a '94 940 Wentworth Estate 2.0 Turbo, and had a dodgy in tank pump that was making my main fuel pump in the cradle under passenger side seat area very noisy. I had loads of help from forum members on here, and there are several threads on here giving great tips about the pump/sender unit, best way to deal with it etc. From my understanding there are two different set ups, one like mine that has a lift pump in the tank along with a main pump, and the other type just has one pump, first thing is to know what sort your model has and need I would suggest. I sourced a used complete unit as a back up from eBay, and ordered new parts such as the large rubber tank seal, E10 fuel immersion compatible fuel hose that goes inside the tank to the pump from Brookhouse Volvo. For the actual pumps, I used Rock Auto from USA as suggested by Dave aka Laird Scooby, parts were way cheaper even when paying shipping and only took a week or so. Alternatively if couldn't recommend highly enough Chris Harris from FRF Volvo in Swansea, if you email him on chrisharris@frf-motors.co.uk give your VIN and what you're after, he is very helpful. Also ask for VOC discount, varies but usually between 10-30% Some parts might be unavailable or might have to come from GCP Classic Parts in Sweden. Good luck, Cheers Steve |

Thanks for all the detailed replies guys.
I should have clarified a bit more. I had originally ordered a Bosch fuel pump from Skandix a few weeks ago and thought I would simply remove the old pump and swap it in. However the pump that came out was not the one Skandix supplied and, to my surprise, found the sender unit's return pipe very rusty and the pump in a similarly poor state, which is obviously why it's failed. I didn't like the look of it all so got on to Volvo about the sender unit, who informed me it was discontinued. The part no. 9142958. I have on order a Volvo fuel pump, p/n 9438756, but was hoping someone might have a spare sender or an idea about how to use the different Bosch fuel pump (I can't remember the p/n off hand, Skandix claim it's also oem 9438756, but it's a black unit with a larger diameter than the Bosch unit in my car p/n 0580453520). There is no secondary pump under the car, it has only one pump in the tank. I have possibly sourced a second-hand sender in Sweden, but will see. Brexit has made things tricky here so I don't generally order from the UK anymore as things are either delayed, have a big customs charge, or are sent back by the post before I can do anything. Thanks again for the replies and excuse the convoluted post..! |
