Removing locking wheel nuts
Has anyone had much joy getting a stripped locking wheel nut off?
I don't care about scratching the alloys, just want them off! I'm guessing if I get the spinning collar off then I would have a chance at smashing a socket on but will need to work out how to break the collar. |

Presumably these are the Mcgard locking nuts which often cause issues.
If they are, take a photo of the locking nut face and send it to Mcgard who can identify which key is required and they will sell you one direct and post it out. Once removed throw them away and replace with standard wheel bolt

If you have a local friendly garage, an air hammer with the correct bit would break the collar off. Then you can either weld a big nut on or use locking wheel removal tool or similar. Obviously correct steps taken before welding on the car.

It's one that I'm fixing on my drive - so ideally suggestions that don't require getting someone out

Get yourself a female brake pipe nut and hammer it into the locking nut until it deforms to the shape, then get a socket onto the brake nut and you should be able to remove it no problem. Halfords or most motor factors sell them in packs of 2 or 10 for not a lot.

As the OP has already stated, the PIA with the McGard kit that's fitted on the XC90 from the factory is the rotating anti-theft collar, if the OP is doing this himself that must be removed first, and the chances of damaging the wheel is very high as it is surprisingly deep set with almost no clearance between the wheel and the collar.
Despite the advice given "normal" garages/tyre fitters etc in general wont touch it as they know they will damage the wheel trying to get the collar off. Go on ask me how I know My local dealer removed the issue , took them hours, but they did do the job and thankfully only charged 1hr of labour (although it took much longer, as I sat drinking their coffee and eating the buns and biscuits provided.) Good luck on removing the collar, you may be lucky with your first attempt. Personally I would find a garage to weld a nut/bolt and socket and remove the offending bolt that way (the method my dealer chose) but your likely to get wheel damage which ever method you go with.

For clarity, the key is fine, the bolt is not.
And yes it is that pesky spinning collars. While I'm feeling annoyed I should remember to take them off my other cars. It's a double edged sword - I need to adjust my parking brakes before getting it MOT'd. It's very much a project car so have been trying to do it myself. I'm really not fussed about the damaging the wheel. If it scratches it I literally do not care at all. If it damages enough that it's an MOT failure then it's not ideal but I'm sure I could source a replacement at some point. Last edited by SynonymForTree; Nov 14th, 2023 at 00:01. |

Are you actually replacing something as the parking brake adjustment is actually done from inside the car and nothing needs removed to adjust it, replacement/cleaning is different but not adjustment.
