The car, Sensus or AAOS, will not select 'Charge' by itself in any driving mode. That is something the driver has to do themselves.

Several points following 12 month ownership V60 T6 18.? Battery.
1) getting energy back into the battery should not be attempted EXCEPT as a means of reducing speed. Using the "charge" option costs more in petrol than it recovers in battery power. Also in hybrid mode there is a "braking" effect that reduces speed as you travel. Better use of your speed is made by switching to 'pure" mode which will allow the car to coast/free wheel. This is VERY effective in 30mph zones, as usually you will need to slow down/stop; and its these actions that can be used to regenerate battery. This technique is also effective when the road your on has a long down hill. 2tonne Volvos coast for what seems like miles.
Additionally I agree don't use battery for extended time above 50 mph.
Cheers Bob

Interesting thread as I have been wondering whether my Sensus battery management is any clever at all. I have a XC90 T8 11.6kwh and tried using Sensus map planning a few days ago using home as a final destination. The trip was around 26 miles round trip / mix of dual carriageways (max 40mph) and urban.

I started the trip with 15 miles electric range and after the first 13 miles I had 2 miles left in battery range so I did most of the return trip on petrol. It looks as though the remaining 13 miles didn't count at all, I was driving on Hybrid mode all the time.

Thank you for all your replies.

Having got more familiar with the car I have found the best strategy for me is to use the hold function when I get on the higher speed roads.

It’s a little disappointing that the car isn’t a little more intelligent.
