Raise shields Mr Sulu...
Changed starter on a 1.8i 440. Awkward but was just a matter of removing some heat shields I understand.

Before you leap into buying a new starter , just try the following simple test .
Connect the battery earth directly to the engine using just one jump lead , i have often found that the body looses it earth connection . By using the jump lead you can restore the bad earth , always try the simple things first . After that batter the starter , swear a lot & down several beers . Kidding about battering the starter , also ensure that the terminals are all bright & shiny as that can also give the impression of a seized starter . When you turn the key do you hear a clunk as the solenoid kicks in ? if not again suspect a duff earth
