Hi all, and a very happy new year!
My S70 is in dire need of a service, and as it is currently uninsured I will not be able to take it to the mechanic. So what I am planning to do is buy a set of spark plugs, air filter x 1 and some Mobil 1 and try and tackle this myself. I am very inexperienced mechanically but have done some research on what needs to be done. So, should I take on the challenge, or am I out of my depth? All suggestions greatly appreciated. |

Air filter and plugs are easiest - though you may need a torx bit to get the spark plug cover off.
HT leads/rotor/distributor eventually need replacing....these are a simple spanner job. Oil change is slightly harder in that you need to get under the car. Remember to use a new crush washer on the sump plug. There's a good recent guide with photos on here for the 850. http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showpo...06&postcount=1 The other thing to check is for play in the raised wheels, and then brake wear when you've taken a wheel off. Retorc the wheelbolts. Coolant and brake fluid also need replacing every couple of years. Most other things are inspect/lubricate. I think I could buy the service parts (filters, plugs, washer, oil) for about £70. My indy charges £60 for oil, £50 for parts, £80 labour + vat = £220 Last edited by cootuk; Jan 1st, 2008 at 23:08. |

Hiya,
it doesn't matter that you're inexperienced - we all were when we started :-) Just go carefully! One tip I'd give is to be very careful when putting new sparkplugs back in not to cross thread them. I normally lower them down with the socket and an extension bar attached, and turn them as if *un-doing* until a slight click is felt. Now gently tighten *by hand* and it should go almost all the way in with only hand pressure. You shouldn't be able to cross thread them doing it this way :-) Cheers, Pete
