Default Xc90 tyres 275/35r22

Has anyone fitted 275/40 r22 tyres to their xc90? Just wondering if it’s possible as we have had 3 blow outs in 3 months thanks to potholes

I dont think that an extra 5% on the sidewall profile (which equates to around 12mm more sidewall on a 275/40 22 vs 275/35 22 tyre) is going to make a massive difference in preventing pot hole tyre damage. It will affect your speedo reading though as the 40 tyre's overall diameter is 28mm larger than the 35 tyre which means its rolling circumference will be larger and make your speedo under-read as your wheels are spinning slower.
The best defence is avoidance of said potholes but understandably, some roads have so many they can be difficult to avoid sometimes. Next best is to drop wheel size to increase sidewall but keep diameter to equivalent size as you currently have (e.g. 275/45 20 has almost the same diameter as 275/35 22 but a 27mm larger sidewall).
See below link to a good tyre size calculator to check out and compare things:

Yeah I’m aware that not hitting potholes is the ideal 🤣
If I go to a 40 profile I can fit all terrain tyres which have a better side wall
Just wandering if clearances may be an issue I would like to put 20” rims on but need to find some second hand unless someone fancy a swap for 22’s

I have done 174k miles in an XC90 T8 (which is the heaviest of the XC90s). I have lugged heavy loads (had about 700kg in and on the car once).

I have - touch wood - never had a blow out and I can only remember a couple of punctures. I drive on a good selection of roads with plenty of potholes.

From new I deliberately specced a Momentum (softer suspension than the R Design at the time) and it had the smallest wheels (235/55 R19). I have never regretted my decision.

out of interest what tyre pressures are you using ? With these ultra low profile tyres minimum should be 38 psi preferably more, check for bent rims too...

Running it at factory spec psi which is what you suggest.
Ordered some 275 40 r22 all terrain tyres hope they fit.
We didn’t choose the wheels they were on it when we bought it second hand our previous xc90 had 20’s on never had a problem with them and loads better getting across a grass field hopefully the all terrain tyres will help or I’ll be looking at finding som 20’s to fit.

We experienced similar issues running the PZ4 NCS on the XC60 22s (265/35/22, so slightly narrower profile) it was getting costly, some of our fault, some just getting a bulge in sidewall for a bump in the road, seems its not a strong tyre, think the sidewall is soft to aid ride comfort.

It's possible another brand of tyre would have improved things I would have probably tried that before going with a non standard size

I decided to cut my losses and put some 20s on as I could not sustain the average of 1 tyre a month, of course not long after changing this missus managed to rip a chunk out of the 20s trying to get the Volvo around on old narrow car park ramp fortunately just the rim protector in the rubber but damn to be fair I feel it's tight in my little city car.

No issues since this change in size though, no bulges, no blowouts, just doing what a tyre should do.

That's the experience I want to hear. I am glad your costs have improved since changing to 20. I also run 20s (factory fitted) and that's the maximum I am willing to accept for 2 tonne car, for my next one, I will be looking for a smaller tyre, just for peace of mind, and extra smoothness in the ride on bumpy roads.
