Default 2.0D - HOW much for a new exhaust?!

I've had a noisy exhaust with vibration for a while and it has now been flagged at MOT. Culprit appears to be the flexi-pipe, but that seems to be where it gets complicated!

The parts system at the Volvo dealer is unclear. Apparently, the flexi-pipe goes up into the catalyst - and that means you have to replace the catalyst as well as the flexi pipe. Further more, the parts system says if you replace the catalyst, you have to replace all subsequent parts and silencers etc. And this means a £2.5k+ bill for a 2008 car, which I don't actually want to sell yet.

Do I really need a new cat? Does anyone have any advice? Or know how to fix it more cheapy, whilst retaining the existing cat?

Car is a V50 2.0D SE Lux with 160k miles
6th, 7th, 8th digits on the VIN are 754.
No separate DPF or ELOYS fluid thing; I understand the Euro 4 is from the beefed up catalyst.

The flexi-pipe is integrated in the cat, however, the only mentioning of replacing exhaust parts in VIDA is if you need to replace one of the mufflers then you need to replace the other one as well if it hasn't already been replaced.

If it was me, I'd only replace the cat, there's a big flange connecting it to the rest of the exhaust system so I really can't see why more parts should need replacing.
