Hi,

First thing to do would be get the codes off. If you don't have that OBDII port in the bottom of the arm rest then you should have a diagnostic port on the suspension turret. The FAQ will help here:
FAQ: Code Reading...

The Diagnostic unit in the engine bay doesn't need a reader or machine as it is an LED flash unit. LED will flash for the codes and there are instructions in the cover for operation.

You can make an LED flash reader if you have the OBDII port in the arm rest storage as the car isn't OBD compliant!

Did you mead 'already'?

If you read the section in the FAQ entitled Engine and OBD Diagnostic Codes, you will find that pre '95 940s have a diagnostic box in the engine bay, from which fault codes can be read by means of a push button and flashing led.

940s built after 1995 do not have this diagnostic box but instead have an OBDII diagnostic port fitted in the base of the central armrest. The diagnostic system in these cars is not OBDII compliant however, so generic OBDII scanners will not work.

Volvo in their wisdom decided to keep the diagnostics the same as the earlier 940s so all you need to do is build a simple device that plugs into the OBD port and replicates the function of the engine bay diagnostic box.
The procedure for retrieving fault codes (and cancelling them) is the same as described in the FAQ.
The only difference is that instead of moving a connector between sockets to access various functions, I have used a rotary switch.

It should be attached to the nearside strut tower.
