Default 1986 760 turbo wagon transmission shot

Old 760 turbo wagon in really good shape but the auto transmission slips and is refusing to go up some hills. The car has 370,000 Kms. What is involved in swapping in a new auto transmission? The cost to have it done professionally would far exceed the value of the car.

ZF at that age.

Unbolt prop from gearbox

Undo gearbox oil cooler lines

Disconnect gear change linkage underneath car and disconnect wiring for reverse switch

Remove kickdown cable from throttle spool thing

Remove the panel between rear of engine and gearbox held on with four 14mm bolts

Undo the bolts holding the torque converter to the gearbox I think four 17mm on the last one I did which was an AW71

Remove the starter motor bolts but no need to disconnect wiring

Undo all of the bellhiusing bolts which are 18mm, this is the hard part trying to undo the ones near the top if it's not on a ramp, last one I did was on axle stands on a trailer!

Then drop the gearbox off and do the reversal to refit

I may have forgotten something but that's the gist of it

Have you tried a fluid change (do it in 2 or 3 stages) first?

Could also be the uni-directional clutch in the torque converter - if that has seized, it won't allow full torque multiplication and will give harsh shifts.
