Universal joint removal
What am I doing wrong? i can drive it through so far but not far enough to remove cap. Should I have tried to remove the shaft side first?

You need to prise off the UJ caps in order to remove the UJ cruciform from flange/prop UJ fingers. The reverse for fitting your new UJ's. If they're really stuck angle grind them off by cutting through the UJ arms...I had to do this the other weekend where the UJ caps simply wouldn't budge outwards. If possible, by the GKN driveline UJ's from Simon as they come with built in long body grease nipples. Part no' is 18050 [7.886.00.06.18.050 ZKG] [20-50 GKN]. Good luck...

It makes no difference whether you start with the shaft side or the flange side.
Your next step is to pull out the cap on the left side of your pic. If you can't push it through any further from the right side, you will need to grab it with a wrench or in the vice and lever it out. You can then push the cruciform back to the right, to push that cap out on the right hand side. There will come a point, probably before the right hand cap is completely out, when the cruciform can be wiggled out of the flange lugs. Then do the same on the shaft side, and clean everything up before refitting in reverse. |

Get hold of the bearing cap in a vice, really tight. Brute force and a lever will remove this. get a socket to fit over the UJ and push it back as far as is needed to get the opposite bearing cap poking out. Grip in vice and repeat.
Salut! Pookie

Once you've tapped the cap as far out of the yoke with the X piece do the same on the opposite side. You will then have enough room to slide a screw driver inside the caps to tap them out with a hammer. Do the same for the other two. Clean everything up/degrease making sure the circlip grooves are clean. Paint the flange and the end of the prop if you like and fit new U/J the next day.

Thanks all. Sorted. Brute force won the day.
