Default XC60 2012 electric boot drops

Hey all,
New ish XC60 owner, lux, d4 2litre fwd edition, 2012 with the electric boot open/close function.
Unfortunately mine droops, it goes up to full extent and then slowly droops to about 1/2 way open. I can push it back to the top and it'll droop back again to around the same place. Electric close works fine.
Am I right in thinking the two struts are gas based but with the electric motor added to them, and so my droop is due to the gas part of the strut failing.

Would I be able to replace just the gas struts component or is it a complete replace, how would I tell which one it is?
And finally, I've seen some reference to gas or hydraulic boot struts, how can I tell which ones I have?

Thank you folks!
Andy

Hi Andy, this has been covered in the past but from what I have read on here, I believe it’s a full replacement ( the strut and motor are not separates). Some have just replaced with gas struts to make them manual, new ones a bit pricey.

Not sure what it would cost for a 2012 as I believe the mechanism was updated by the time they built my 2017 model. However, it's just cost Volvo warranty around £800 to replace the stuts on mine as it was drooping around 6" after opening fully

If it wasn't going to be covered, I was going to go down the gas strut route as I wasn't going to spend so much fixing it myself

Jeez - what's happened to the 'Volvos are different', 'Volvo only use the highest quality parts', 'Volvos will last for much longer than normal cars' statements that drew me into XC60 ownership?

Sounds like the quality is down the pan and I should have stuck with BMWs & Audis!

From AUTODOC £266 per strut for a 2012

Alfa Romeos and Lancias lasted longer than that though.

Mines 10 years old and still going strong, but I doubt if the tailgate struts are made by Volvo. There is probably more world wide still working as they should than dropping after opening.

Ta folks, sorry I'd missed the replies.

Yeah, I'm fine with them failing, gas struts on boots do and it's getting on a bit, so fair play I'd say.

As i'm not sure if it's one or both I'm going to give this a go:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/154614501...3ABFBM7MvTmu9g

Change that/test it and see how I get on.
I've not seen how they're left or right handed yet as not taken one off, probably some bracket difference so depending on what I find with that one.

Any comments, or just go for it and try!

Cheers,
Andy

Thumbs down

An update, after replacing the right hand strut only, it seems the car doesn't like that ebay strut :-(

The button triggers the boot, it starts to lift and then stops, as though it's meeting too much resistance and stopping to avoid damage. Same on the down lift.
If I manually lift it right to the top it holds, press the button it goes down about 15" then stops, press the button it moves about the same and stops.

I've tried the lift to full extend and hold button more than 3 seconds to ensure it has max lift, but no luck it keeps stopping.

Any ideas on how to 'reset' it, I'm assuming it needs to learn the resistance/forces with the new one installed but no idea if that's easy or if it's a coding which I don't have :-(

Thanks in advance.
