Default period roof racks

folks,

anyone know of an amazon roofrack for sale, or know of any period looking universal/vw bug type roofracks that fit the Amazon saloon?

i am looking to carry windsurfing gear so need something pretty substantial..
enough for a couple of boards, masts, sails, etc..

don't want to go down the thule road though, as they don't look great on older cars..

I'm looking too. If I find one I'll let you know (& do likewise if you are successful).

This one had a really nice metal & wood rack. The sort of thing that I would like to buy. Does not look like a VW one though.

Have a look at the photos of my genuine Volvo roof rack - I love it!

They sometimes come up on this Swedish ebay type thinger http://http://www.blocket.se/

Genuine roofracks for estates are much more easy to source like the one I had on my estate. But often people put them on the wrong way around and they fit appallingly - the slanted end is supposed to be at the back!

That, I'm sure of it, is not a 240 Estate roof-rack. Never seen one like that.

It looks like an Amazon roof-rack to me.... It looks identical to the one I had on my estate

If the seller has used it on a 240 then it's probably a 145 one. I think the correct 240 ones lost the wood. Probably too wide for the Amazon so you'll need the gutter to gutter measurement from your car, a proper Amazon rack, a 145 one, and the eBay rack to make sure.

It's not at all possible to mount the roof rack the wrong way. The roof line make's it impossible. (It's more narrow at the tail).

I wouldn't label it "easy" to find. They show up once in a while - yes - but it's for sure not easy to find - let alone in reasonable condition.

The Amazon Estate and the 145/245 roof rack is exactly the same design/style etc. - but they are NOT interchangeable. The roof line on the 145 is a lot wider than on the Amazon.
There are tons of those for the 145/245 - if you want a NOS in orig. box - just let me know. (Tons - if it's easy to find the Amazon ones)..

Nope - Volvo continued selling the 145 one for the 245 in the early years. Somewhere arround late 1970'ies (maybe beginning 1980'ies) - Volvo made (well, got made) a huge alloy roof rack available for the 245 (to replace the old one - this new one could also be used on the 745).

swedishandgerman;
If your last photo is of your Estate - with the roof rack in question on - then it's for sure a modified roof rack. As you say yourself, the tilted end is surposed to be at the tail - on the photo it's clear that the tilted end is up front - and that is simply not possible with the genuine roof rack for the Amazon Estate. The one in the photo is most likely a 145/245 one cut and re-welded to fit.

Do you have a close up? Just asking - what makes it a genuine one?
(We are talking the one on the blue sedan, right?)
