It has a 5 speed gearbox, 12v, an electric starter and disc brakes (with ABS) - these all make it nicer to ride but not faster. I’d say vibration is about the same as a 1960s model - white knuckles above 50MPH - as a result the heat shield on the silencer did fall off somewhere in the Netherlands. The motor doesn’t leak any oil, but it did use about half a litre in 800 miles - so that is much like the Reddich model as well.

All the guys I was travelling with had Triumph, Honda and BMW bikes of between 1000cc and 2.5 litres, but the Enfield did (more or less) keep up.

The Arnhem anniversary was first class - the Dutch people are far more respectful than British folk.

To bring my Arnhem report to an end, here are two last photos. The first is my Royal Enfield amongst a sea of Hondas, Triumphs and BMWs. The other is of a Red Devils parachutist passing directly overhead at about 300’ at the DZ. The Dutch people watching absolutely loved it - what a good advertisement for the UK that was.

Who doesn’t need a V8 Volvo, and if it’s anywhere near the guide price, my piggy bank may come under duress.

However the listing says that there is a DVLA letter regarding the change of engine, but on checking the DVLA registration details it’s listed as a 1986cc ???

Cheers
Steve
It certainly sounds like a well thought-out conversion and i can imagine quite a few piggy-bnks re quaking in their trotters at the moment.

I also noticed it was listed as 1986cc so maybe the seller never got round to informing the DVLA in the hope he could run it as is until it was past the 40 year threshold and then submit the engine change after.

That is a good point about the historic registration Dave. If you are right I think that might be a daft strategy: aside from being illegal, the insurance would be very difficult with an incorrectly registered vehicle.

Addendum: this won’t qualify for the free tax until April 2031, and was converted to the V8 motor 6 years ago. It would be hard to argue one hadn’t noticed the change in that 13 years.

I'm in the same boat despite my Scottish heritage. As you can imagine I always coveted a R-R decanter, but it would have just sat on the shelf, unused, gathering dust. They are of the finest quality and quite delightful.

Nice one, Alan. I've always believed that there is a strong correlation between 'Bikers' and the 'Military'. I'm pleased that the 'Enfield did not disgrace itself in such exalted company.

When I was an apprentice at RR in the '60s, a colleague toured the continent on a James Autocycle with a 98cc Villiers single speed motor. He proudly displayed the 'GB' plate for years afterwards!

Regards, John.

No details in the link, but I imagine it is a prop from an exhibit from the Chelsea Flower Show or such like. That sort of thing is achingly fashionable at the moment. I'm sure Matthewsons are hoping it will weed out the tyre kickers.
