Indeed, I have driven cars with less; my 1971 Fiat 500 produced just 18.5 (Don't forget the 'point five' - at that level you need every little you can get.). It would carry four at a (big) pinch - more a 'two plus two' - at 50 - 60 MPH and felt like a cork in a bath tub on motorways.

My first powered two wheeler was a 32cc Cyclemaster that produced 0.7 and would propel you to work or 'tech' at 20 MPH with a little LPA (light pedal assistance) up hills. Most mopeds of the day made between 1 and 2, and a 1950s BSA 250 C10, not surprisingly, ten. I think we have become used to, some might say 'spoiled by', the power of modern machinery. Don't knock that 27 BHP - embrace it!

Regards, John.
These things are all relative John. I doubt that my 6 year old Pegasus model makes much more power than the original did back in the 1960s. My motorcycle has FI, but that is to make the emissions okay rather than for performance. It has a 5 speed gearbox, 12v, an electric starter and disc brakes (with ABS) - these all make it nicer to ride but not faster. I’d say vibration is about the same as a 1960s model - white knuckles above 50MPH - as a result the heat shield on the silencer did fall off somewhere in the Netherlands. The motor doesn’t leak any oil, but it did use about half a litre in 800 miles - so that is much like the Reddich model as well.

All the guys I was travelling with had Triumph, Honda and BMW bikes of between 1000cc and 2.5 litres, but the Enfield did (more or less) keep up.

The Arnhem anniversary was first class - the Dutch people are far more respectful than British folk.

This appears almost too good to be true.....

https://angliacarauctions.co.uk/auct...122s-ruddspeed

Whilst interior changes may not be everyone's cup of tea , it would appear to be a cracking motor for anyone perhaps interested in dabbling with an odd regularity rally, for very modest outlay.

£6 - £8k guide and the shell looks sound, MOT history to 2023 not too bad, no corrosion advisories.

Cheers

Thoughts.......I think a Rover V8 ???? engined 740

https://www.mathewsons.co.uk/auction...pp=48&pn=1&g=1

Actually looks a good car, MOT history not too bad, insurance might be an issue, and probably is a tad thirsty. My only complaint is that it really deserves to have the V8 logo removed from the grille, and a standard tailpipe to keep it looking a standard barge.

Cheers

You're correct Steve, it is a Rover V8 engine. I doubt its any worse on fuel than the original engine, in fact it's probably better! Power and/or torque to weight ratio better than the original engine so outweighs the extra capacity on the economy front.

I agree about removing the V8 monstrosity from the grille, a proper P6 "V8" badge should be procured and applied to the tailgate under the "740 GL" badge, discretely if a V8 badge is in fact wanted/needed.
Those badges are, i believe, still available as they were used on V8 LDV Sherpas (a rare animal, mostly ambulances, police undercover vans and i believe the Bomb Disposal Squad also used them) so there should be a few floating about somewhere.

No idea on insurance, i suppose it depends whether it comes with n engineers report confirming it's safe. The brakes are on a par, maybe better than the Rover, the car is slightly lighter (but not much!) and the suspension architecture is similar to the SD1 so i wouldn't think insurance would be all that bad.
Of course, that depends on the driver..........

Hi Dave,

Well since first finding this, it’s certainly piqued my interest

Who doesn’t need a V8 Volvo, and if it’s anywhere near the guide price, my piggy bank may come under duress.

However the listing says that there is a DVLA letter regarding the change of engine, but on checking the DVLA registration details it’s listed as a 1986cc ???

Cheers

That does indeed look nice. The Ruddspeed tweeking must make it very desirable.

Ruddspeed also made spirit decanters in the 1960's which have become very collectable in their own right.

If one bought that motorcar for £6,000 I think that would be a great deal of fun for the money - £8,000 would be fine as well.

I can see the bottoms of the doors and the scuttle are rusty, like on nearly all Amazons, so I suspect a few of the chassis rails, the rear wheel arches and maybe the sills will have a bit of tin worm as well. As long as one didn’t want a show car (in which case it would be better to buy one) then all those bits could be made good pretty easily.

I suppose all that interior stuff could be removed and put in a safe place easily enough.

If I didn’t already have a fairly similar Amazon I’d probably bid on that motorcar.

Alan.

Perhaps this thread needs re-naming as ‘Temptation Corner’.

Marvellous; what a pity I’m not a spirits drinker and so can’t justify buying one.
