that is a very valid point craig, and i was going to post such a point, but it seems im fighting a losing battle!
but as the police service is a 24 hour one, it is unlikely a traffic car will be sat there gettinig cold!

Well I'm with you Jason. As it has been said, Maintained regardless of cost and never cold. Some of the most reliable trucks I have ever worked on are the ones that never stop.

Scenario - a car is cold at least sometimes - TOs get in start to leave garage, get a shout.

And that's just for the engine being cold scenarios.

You've all the rest of the scenarios to consider - shunts to stop cars, shunts to stop cars going any further, speed bumps, poor road surfaces.

I'm not arguing that Police cars aren't adequately maintained. I'm sure in todays litigious world, they can't afford not to be - merely that you can hardly expect they've been driven with the same considerations and criteria that a private motorist would.

I'm sure we've all seen cars at garages - may well have full manufacturers service history, may be mechanically sound - yet the condition reveals the life the car has lived - tired, abused inside, scuffs, rattles and the like.

point taken liuleichan, but as i said, the police is a 24/7 service, you get in, you take over the car from sommeone else, you finish you hand the car over to someone else, but i do see what your saying. me finks maybe its time to finish this thread!
and one last point to note.. ''shunts to stop cars'' in your words. this is the uk, not the us, shunts to stop cars are not a routine way to get a scrote to stop, if they are done, it is not normally intentional and is treated as a police accident (polacc) if the police driver is found to be at fault, he can and may be femoved from driving duties.

Just curious about this bit: "Chipped (courtesy of Her Majesties Constabulary)"
could you expand on that, or would you have to kill me? ;-)

Bobcat says "just to give an idea, i bought my 850r at 120,000 and it now has 170,000 on it.

during this time it has needed new suspension, link rods, ignition, new service items (spark rotor etc), brakes, all the fluids changed, engine mount, wheel bearing, control arms."

Yes Bobcat but you hammer yours!!! LOL

Mines done 173 and has had nothing done except service and aircon. You forget to mention that yours is modded to hell That's why it "needed" the bits LMAO!!!!

go with gut feeling on any purchase i say,,my 850 came from a salvage yard and once the body etc was sorted its been 1st class with 135k now on it i have no regrets.
I see new cars failing for whatever reason, nothing lasts forever.
NASA spend billions on space travel and they failed twice so a bit of wear and tear on a 5,10,30,year old volvo.....no big deal

Just for the record, I was going to purchase an ex-police V70 T-5, but I couldn't find one close enough to home and then the R came up and that's the end of that story!!
To be honest one of the main things I wanted from the police car was the colour.

we look after all the police t-5's at our dealership. By 163,000 miles they have usually had at least one new engine fitted and usually 3 or 4 turbo's as well! the chances are this one may have been done not too long ago. Sounds like you may be onto a bargain! :-)
