Default My poor story in replacement of ETMs...

Hi,

I decided to share with you some information which may be usefull.

This is my poor story of my ETMs.

I recently baugt S60 2.4T 2001r. It has been running fine for first week, then sudenly error came to lcd display saying something in french, I have translated it and it looked like it was related to filth fuel. I have remainded myself that I refueled my car that day so It made sense to me. Ignored that and reseted that error from the computer. Week later I was playing with my car pushing it to the maximums and when I was accelerating yellow triangle appeared and another french text on display but this time my engine went I think to some failure mode and it lost power. After I left it for 10 minutes and came back, started engine everything was alright. Ignored and blamed fuel again. It happened to me 2 times more. I have done research and finally found root cause of my problems - ETM!. Ok so far so good, I looked at my local dealer in Poland for prices of new ETM. I was shocked, it was around 500 punds +replacement+software+upgrading ETM =~ 600 Pounds.

Ok I came here to that forum and read that in UK ETM cost is around 160. I bough then one in London for 187 pounds, so I was satisfied. I was wondering If I should resolder old circuit board to new ETM and stay at that price. After a couple of thoughts I decided that I will replace it at my locals dealer. I did it, 2 weeks car was running perfect.

And now the best part of my story...:

3 days ago in the morning (it was little colder then usual) I could not start my car. The car was starting for a second then cuted out. Tried a couple of times, after around 20 it started and everything was ok. I drived to work with hope that it will not happen again. Unfortunatelly it happened afterwork when I tried to start the engine. Again I tried a couple of times and eventually it started and I drove home. The funny thing was that when it finally started it run without problems and I could turn off/on engine after a couple of hours and everything was fine. I was doing a lot of research what might been wrong. I started with blaming immobilizer, then a couple of sensors. Tried disconnecting almost everything from my car in search for such failure. I wasn't thinking of ETM because it was NEW!!!. Then I disconnected ETM, gues what - the same symptoms as they were in the morning!!!. Tried with connecting my old ETM to the connector without placing it into the car and the car started without problems so I was sure it is the ETM issue. THE NEW ETM HAS FAILED AFTER 2 WEEKS. Because I bought it in London it was rather hard to remove it and send for guaranty because of time and the money I spent for replacement etc.

I was nervous about that and decided to resolder both sides of my NEW broken ETM to the old ETM. Did it today. It was hard because I have no garage and it was cold. I needed to remove fan to get to it. Took it off the cars and taken home. I have removed cover and I saw some plastic covering pins, it was really hard to get it out. I tried to use burner on that plastic and then it was easier to remove. I have removed both sides of new ETM and without removing wipers etc I simply entered them to my old ETM and soldered. I placed it into the car and after a couple of hours struggling with black air pipe I finally installed it. My hands are full of cuts (thank you Magnetti Marelli).

It works so far. I need to check in the morning tomorrow if everything is ok and will let you know.

I was worried it would not work because the new ETM has little different resistances at thin film carbon resistors. For instance I measured old one and compared with new one.

Right side (3 pins):
between 2 right pins:
old ETM - 1,6k min, 5,3k max
new ETM - 2,3k min, 6,6k max

Left side (5 pins):
between 2 and 4 pin:
old ETM - 2,5k min, 11k max
new ETM - 1,9k min, 11,55k max

So you can see it is slightly different, maybe it because my old ETM part number is lower than 1 that new with yellow sticker on it.

Anyway now the cars is running without problems on these resistors from new ETM and circuit board from old ETM.

Here is the old ETMs film resistor, you can simply see it is wiped out (after 135 000 km):

Yesterday and today it was -2 degrees so I am now 100% sure it was new ETM problem because my car is running perfectly now.

Arrow Thank you

Thank you for this very informative post. My 2000 S80 has exactly the same symptoms. So far, did crank sensor, cam sensor, MAF, fuel pump, Volvo did the software upgrade on ETM, car was a little better after that, but only for a short time. I can start it by pressing accelerator peddle to floor, then releasing it. could it be bad throttle body also?

Hi,

Is it possible to buy that potentiometer? It should be possible. Of course, it is difficult to find it, but I presume Magneti Marelli is using components available on open market.

Hi, After a lot of trips to my Volvo Dealer earlier this year with our 2002 S60 I discovered that the other problem is the throttle pedal which is apparently also Magnetti Marelli and does the same trick as the ETM. A new one for around £120 has fixed this car perfectly. You also need to have the software fix at the same time. The MM pedal is fitted to our car even though it is a 2002 model and thankfully has a Bosch ETM. Hope that helps. G

Hopefully you will read this Bloto; I wanted to ask if you have any other extra pictures, because I am very good with a soldering iron so I might do this too. Thanks!
