Just wondering if all ETM issues are the same and exactly what I should be looking for or whether I should be worried.

I picked the car up on 158k miles and it still pulls like a train and has mostly main dealer FSH.However, when you stop at traffic lights for example, the idle can hunt and goes a fraction over 1k rpm and a fraction under. If you take the auto box out of drive and put it in park or neutral, it seems to hunt far less (or simply not at all) and mostly sits ticking over happily.

Is this a bad sign, or could this be related to something else?

If it is a 98 then it shouldn't have an ETM it should have a normal throttle cable assuming it has the normal throttle cable clean out the idle air control valve - Mike

Aha! I have only had the car since last night, so my under bonnet inspection was simply a quick fluid check etc.I shall have another look and report back

Ok, silly question number 1 of a series....where is the throttle cable? Can't see anything!

Looks very much like I have the dreaded ETM then

It also has a white sticker on it which it seems means it's an original!
