ETM Issues Discuss issues regarding the problems with ETMs fitted to Volvo cars.

Information
  • VOC Members: There is no login facility using your VOC membership number or the details from page 3 of the club magazine. You need to register in the normal way
  • AOL Customers: Make sure you check the 'Remember me' check box otherwise the AOL system may log you out during the session. This is a known issue with AOL.
  • AOL, Yahoo and Plus.net users. Forum owners such as us are finding that AOL, Yahoo and Plus.net are blocking a lot of email generated from forums. This may mean your registration activation and other emails will not get to you, or they may appear in your spam mailbox

Our experience was that it took about a year/20k miles for the first signs (occasional rough idle) to develop into regular rough idle, stalling/coughing etc.

If yours developed the fault quickly, it might be worth getting the diagnostic done before jumping into replacing the ETM.

I agree it's worth getting a proper diagnosis first but I suspect the previous owner knew about the fault but kept quiet. It was motorway all the way home when I collected it so it behaved but it does seem to have developed rather quickly. I noticed the pipe from the power steering pump wasn't bolted to the turbo pipe where it should have been. Looks like the turbo pipe has been off for some reason but who knows when.
