ETM Issues Discuss issues regarding the problems with ETMs fitted to Volvo cars.

  • VOC Members: There is no login facility using your VOC membership number or the details from page 3 of the club magazine. You need to register in the normal way
  • AOL Customers: Make sure you check the 'Remember me' check box otherwise the AOL system may log you out during the session. This is a known issue with AOL.

I have heard that "if it's one fault, it can't be fixed, if not it can".

So my option when I had my ETM failure....I went for the "sledge hammer" approach.

I ordered mine from XeMODeX in Canada.

They send you one...and you send them your old one.

Yes you get hit by "import tax"...but, I believe no other places can't fix them like they do...and that will cost you to find out, a used one comes with it's own issues, a Volvo one (like everything Volvo) will be the same rubbish....so XeMODeX was my only choice (AND it doesn't need to be "reprogammed" !).

Anyway, got it, fitted it, sent my one to them.

And it started and drove as it should have done ages ago ...with out the fear of it "dying" in the outside lane of the M25 .....as it did before !

The cost includes a guantee (lifetime, if I remember), they were fast and it worked.

The magneti marelli throttle bodies are known to fail, due to the contacts on position sensors wearing through. Volvo then released an improved (but not totally fixed) version with better software (the yellow label version 8644347). the software could also be downloaded to the original white label version 8644346. The improved version includes a diagnostic "ETM sweep" function available through dice, which should confirm if the sensors are shot or failing. The advantage of having your old tb refurbed, is that the old ETM inside already matches the car (ECU etc), a xemodex unit comes preprogrammed for your VIN, so does not require reprogramming. dont know if BBA do any reprogramming. If you have an original white label TB that was never software upgraded, it might be a good idea anyway . It is possible to buy a replacement sensor like the one xemodex use and repair it yourself, but is requires some work. Buying a new volvo ETM will definitely require programming for your vehicle and will 2x - 4x the cost of the other options. fitting a used TB will also almost certainly require reprogramming, as I've been told the software versions must match in the ETM, ECU and TCM (transmission). Lastly I gather its usually best to replace the MAF sensor at the same time, as these can fail also and are relatively inexpensive. I have been through this process with an S60 and it was a steep learning curve and information from dealers and independants is typically incomplete and conflicting. I had one independent volvo service guy tell me a used TB couldnt possibly work (110% sure he said), he wanted $1100 for a new volvo part. So guess what, after reprogramming at another volvo indie, the used one worked just fine. no codes, no problems.

When I had the ETM repaired in the UK by bba remanufacturing it came back and has worked fine for the past three and half years, I didn't change the MAF and it still has the original one fitted with no issues so don't go changing stuff that you don't need to, if its faulty then get it swapped out, if it works leave it alone.
A couple of pointers that put me off the xemodex route, the cost of the postage to and from America for a quick turn around was bloody expensive, also if you remove your ETM to send it to Xemodex make sure you remove the starter motor steady bracket to release the ETM cable, if you cut the cable they won't accept your ETM (bba did as I chopped the cable then repaired it as it was a quicker way to remove the lump of crap).

When you fit the repaired unit to the car fit it, connect it and leave the car with the ignition ON but no engine running for about 15 minutes prior to starting the engine otherwise it won't rev smoothly - Mike
