Default Vehicle breakdown, options?

Alright, the day as I was planning to take my car to the garage to get an issue looked at, it decided to fail on me so can't get the car off the drive to a garage now. So.... trying to consider what the next best step to take is.

I cancelled my roadside recovery cover as hardly used the car during covid, so it's typical this should happen now.

Is it worth taking out a new roadside recovery policy, wait the 24 hours and make a call for them to come out, they have a look, realise its not fixable and then take motor to a garage?

Or is it cheaper to call a local recovery firm to take my car to a garage for me?

With a new roadside recovery package, at least then thats me covered for a whole year.

RAC seem to have an offer on just now:

£7.50 /month^^
Roadside + home rescue
Tow anywhere in the UK
Up to 2 days alternative transport
while your car's being fixed
Unlimited callouts

Advise on this would be much appreciate and if anyone has ever had to go through this also.

Thanks

you get free breakdown recovery for a year with your yearly service at the dealer...
another option is with your insurance for about £50 a year...

For my Mini ,I use a Green Flag scheme. It’s about 25 pounds a year for the policy but £40 extra IF you call them out. Half on hour on site to get you going or transport for repair or home .

Cake and eat it, if you ask me!😀

Yeah last year was a local garage for a service. Year before was dealer. Every other year for a major service it will go to my Volvo garage. For oil, oil filter, fuel filter etc on a basic service just go local. Ah well, it's stung me this time.

I would ask the garage where you plan to take it for the work to be done to give you a quote to recover the car and also ask a local recovery firm.

Not sure what the cause of the problem is to be honest. I am inclined to take it my local Volvo garage which I normally use.

That's your best option - usually garages have a man with trailer they would normally use, if not some sort of towing vehicle of their own.

I wouldn't take out a policy and then expect to claim 24 hours later, they're wise to most ruses.

The only thing I could see that there is a grace period for 24 hours. After that, then shouldnt be an issue.

The above no. is for Scott, I've used him previously and was happy with price and service. He's E'burgh based. Might be worth a call?
