Not quite sure what you mean about no petrol cars available under 5 years old. There are loads out there

And another couple of questions is the Sat Nav any good? and what about updates assume not free? Have a DIY Garmin fitted in the Freelander, looks like car came with it, and obviously updates are free. Finally is the Volvo geartronic the same as a DSG box?

On the years of cars you are looking at all of the auto's are AISIN Warner TF-80 (the same gearbox as in your Freelander) which is a traditional "slushbox" auto.

Well I have had no problems with the Freelander's box. Changes very nicely barely noticeable
most of the time. Will keep an eye on the sat navs. |

Also have been looking at a couple of Skoda estates, yes I know Skoda.
The Octavia and the Superb. They seem a viable option except the standard offerings are a bit basic in niceties unless one goes up the range somewhat. |

A few people at work have Octavia estates and are generally pleased with them, but "niggles" seem frequent - i.e. the odd £150 repair for a warning light or faulty sensor.
My wife has a Golf, from the same VAG stable, my view is they are predictable "appliances". A Volvo will be part of your family...

Skoda’s are actually decent vehicles. They had a bad name from years ago, but they’ve definitely upped their game!

Skoda are very good these days. My wife is on her third new one and two of my friends have had them for the last 8 years. No issues at all !
The Supberb has mahoosive leg room in the back as well. Miles more than the V70. I'm 6'2" with long legs for my height so by the time my seat is a far back as it will go in my V70 there is hardly any legroom behind me. When I tried the same in the Supberb there was loads of legroom in the back
