Default Stalls when cold

Hello,
My V70 D2 auto has started to stall when pulling away after I start it from cold. I need to restart and gently ease forward, then it seems OK after that.
It only seems to happen in forward gear. It's OK after it's warmed up and doesn't stall if I turn off and back on again.
Any advice on what to check?

Fuel filter would be a start.

I’ve read about this issue on C30 models & it was sorted with either a software update (dealer only), or a fuel filter change.

I’d also suggest getting the car hooked up to diagnostics to see if there’s any underlying problems.

Thanks Kev
I've had it hooked upto VIDA and it's not showing any faults.

Ill try a fuel filter and see if it helps. Cheers.

Worth a try... A fuel filter isn't expensive.

The only other thing I could think of would be a coked up EGR valve... it may need cleaning. Some injector cleaner might not go a miss either (the stuff you pour in your fuel tank). Volvo don't recommend the use of fuel additives, but I've found that they work wonders. Carlube iinjector cleaner is a good one (Halfords sell it), but add it at your own risk.

Report back to let us know how you get on.

I have ordered a fuel filter and see if that cures it.
If not, I'll try to remove and clean the EGR valve.
Is there any "how to's" on this?

I assume its accessed from below the car somewhere?

Cheers

Roy

From the engine bay, but it looks a tad fiddly!

I’m not sure if this car is the same as yours engine layout wise, but it might give you an idea.

I haven't fitted the fuel filter yet as it's not arrived , but I did clean out the EGR valve. It seems to have made a big difference to the issue. Still not 100% fixed, but 90% I'd say.
Access to the EGR was easy it's at the back of the engine at the top and is held on by 2 torx screws.

Dead easy to get to, and to clean. I used brake cleaner to clean it up. It certainly was caked up and was stuck.

I have had this exact issue since owning my D2 and several other owners online too. It only happens when the air temperature is over 15°C and manifests as you say by stalling the car ONLY when moving forward to pull away, but NOT when you reverse, out of my driveway in my case. I've also noticed that after a stall and I rev the engine, I get blue smoke and I have to sit and rev it to get it to behave and allow me to drive off. It will stall time again without revving it. It also idles unevenly and is a bit rough too. I've read that some people still have the same issue even after the firmware upgrade.

The other thing I have noticed is that even after a long run if I sit stationary and rev the engine hard, I get a blast of black smoke out of the exhaust. I have read that this might be because the turbo is not spinning up fast enough and not allowing the fuel to be burnt off resulting in black smoke. It might be the egr needing cleaned?

Fitted the new fuel filter now, but still doing it.
As I said, it's a lot better since I cleaned the EGR but its still doing it.
Im leaning towards a sensor issue.
I may have to let volvo take a look when I'm back off my holidays.

So cleaning the EGR made a big difference… My guess is the manifold is gunked up. That’s a bigger job.
